Sushi & Nori | King Street & Machinery Street, BOWEN HILLS QLD 4006

I recently met up with a girlfriend of mine who I hadn’t seen in almost a year for lunch last week. We used to work together but as life goes on, I got married and had a baby, she got a new role and moved to an office just outside of the CBD, so it was hard to find a mutually convenient time to catch up. The other day when Minibun George was at kindy, we decided to meet up for a quick lunch somewhere close to us, so I suggested Sushi & Nori at the King Street dining precinct.

We were seated at a booth table next to the floor-to-ceiling window which also provided us with a pretty good view of the sushi train. Although, Sushi & Nori isn’t your average sushi train. For a start, natural light floods the eatery of which the fresh, contemporary decor is absolutely beautiful - shiny blue and white fishtail tiles make up the feature wall where chefs stand in front and skillfully slice up fish for sashimi, brass and natural wood finishes make the space feel sleek yet inviting. The lunch menu is somewhat simple yet it still provides a good variety with very reasonable prices.

We each had a bowl of udon ($8 each) and both were delicious - a perfect way to warm up our tummies on a winter’s day. The omakase sushi train has two different categories; $4.50 standard plates and $8 for premium plates (including salmon sashimi). We had a selection of sushi dishes, all of which were very tasty, and we both picked the grilled cheese with salmon as our favourite. To finish the meal, we ordered two ice creams in the flavours of green tea and black sesame. Topped with vibrant berries, the ice cream was extremely velvety and it was impossible to choose a favourite as we were glad to devour both in a heart beat.

Given its close proximity, I think Sushi & Nori is going to be one of my regulars.

The Burrito Bar Banyo | 279 Tufnell Road, BANYO QLD 4014

We indulged in some wonderful produce during our recent Hunter Valley getaway, but having eaten at fine dining restaurants for lunch and dinner consecutively for days on end, the other travel bunnie and I were both craving for something relaxed and fun. We found ourselves at The Burrito Bar Banyo browsing through their menu which offers an abundance of food options, not to mention a delicious selection of cocktails. I had my eyes on the Margarita Romantica which is a blend of Don Julio 1942 Tequila, Cointreau and Midori, shaken with lime juice & agave nectar then garnished with a strawberry. It tasted as yummy as it looked.

After hearing the recommendations from our waitress (whom, mind you, had a great personality and was so attentive yet in a very casual way), I literally wanted everything off the menu. I didn’t, luckily, as the portions were so generous and all we wanted to do after dinner was to curl up into a ball. The chicken wings are a must. They were simply sweet tenderness coated in smoky hickory BBQ sauce. I thought they were the best thing that there is at The Burrito Bar, but that was until I saw my Taco Salad; filled with Mexislaw, pico de gallo, roasted tomato salsa, lime rice and savoury beans with chicken, then topped with sour cream and guacamole, it was all served in a bowl made out of crispy taco chips. No word of a lie, it was the best taco salad I have ever had. I invited the other travel bunnie to try my taco salad, but he insisted that he was completed satisfied with his Ultimate Mexican Burrito. If you are a taco fan, be sure to try the Baja fish taco with chipotle mayo, mexislaw & roasted tomato salsa and the Aida taco - slow cooked marinated beef with cheese and pico de gallothe, as they were pretty good as well.

If you go there, make sure you don’t miss out on their churros. Served with vanilla ice cream and lashings of rich chocolate sauce, these cinnamon sugar dusted churros are a wonderful way to finish a Mexican feast.

Tim Ho Wan Westfield Sydney | Sydney, AUSTRALIA

If you are after one of the best cheap eat options in Sydney, Tim Ho Wan is a no brainer. Following its great success in Hong Kong, the world’s cheapest 1 Michelin starred restaurant expanded its business down under. Hooray!

It’s been a few years since our first visit to the original Tim Ho Wan in Mongkok, Hong Kong, so when I found out that Tim Ho Wan made their presence in Sydney, I was ecstatic! Our initial plan was to have dinner at the Chatswood branch on the first night of our arrival, luckily the Westfield Sydney branch in the CBD opened just in time to save us from travelling all the way out (which can be a little inconvenient for Minibun George). Albeit intended as a takeaway only shop, the Westfield CBD branch’s menu still offers most of the popular items that you would want to eat at Tim Ho Wan.

Their baked buns with BBQ pork ($7.80 for a serve of 3) are not to be missed. Those crumbly yet fluffy buns treasured with steamy, sweet BBQ pork filling are just too irresistible and have made Tim Ho Wan famous. Other yum cha quintessentials such as sui mai (pork dumplings with shrimps) and prawn dumplings were also thoroughly enjoyed; although I would rate the sui mai over the prawn dumplings, as I loved the firm texture and every bite was packed with ample flavour. I may have gone slightly overboard with the ordering, but for under $60, you can be sure to have an awesome feast.

DINING IN - Domino's new Pulled Beef Range

What makes you happy? It doesn’t usually take much to put a smile on my face. In fact, I was recently at Starbucks working on my blog while Minibun George took his nap when I received an email from Domino’s, asking if I’d be interested in trying their new pulled beef range. That made me happy.

If you recall, last year I did a review post on the pulled pork range and both the other travel bunnie and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. Adapting the popular street food trend in Australia right now, the new pulled beef range includes three delicious pizzas. The first is Hickory BBQ Pulled Beef, complete with slow cooked pulled beef, rasher bacon, pepperoni, red onion & mozzarella on a BBQ sauce base, topped with a Hickory BBQ sauce swirl. The second is Spicy Harissa Pulled Beef, with slow cooked pulled beef, pepperoni, Italian sausage, fresh tomato, red onion, jalapeños & mozzarella topped with chilli flakes & a spicy harissa sauce. The third pizza is Argentinian Pulled Beef, with slow cook pulled beef, fresh tomato, red onion & mozzarella topped with a chimichurri drizzle. Now unless you don’t like pizza or pulled beef, you should be drooling right now.

I’m supposed to be on a post-cruise diet, but I can never say no to a good pizza. My personal favourite had to be the Spicy Harissa one as it’s got a kick-ass punch that just makes you beg for more. The other travel bunnie however, absolutely loved the Hickory BBQ one. The sweet BBQ sauce has a hint of smokiness that makes the rasher bacon even more tantalising; it’s an absolute winner for meat lovers.

The Bronuts!!!

So, just as I was supposed to start eating healthy, I received an express post envelope last Friday afternoon which contained two vouchers to try out the new Bronut introduced by Donut King. So, I tried to come up with an excuse not to use the vouchers, but the those devilishly good-looking delicious doughnuts pictured on the vouchers were staring right at me and I caved in within seconds.

On Saturday morning, I cunningly suggested to the other travel bunnie that we should have something healthy for breakfast so that he would feel like some midday munchies a later on. And sure enough, by 11am we found ourselves standing at the counter at Donut King. The bright pink and yellow signage brought back so many memories. When I was a lot younger, I worked at a gelati shop on the Gold Coast and there was a Donut King right in front of the shop, so every time when dad picked me up after work, I'd buy a donut for him as a thank you present. Oh good old times.

So there we were, both holding a double stack of sweet, sweet delight toped with delicious chocolate pieces, just nomming away. I'm going to be honest here and disclose the fact that I was unable to finish my bronut despite my very best attempt.

I failed the challenge, but can you snack like a man and finish a bronut?
