400 Gradi at Sea thanks to P&O Australia

Foodies rejoice! Just when you thought that ocean cruising can’t get any better, P&O has decided to bring its guests a big surprise - they are partnering with Australia’s own world’s best pizza maker, Johnny di Francesco, to open the first 400 Gradi at sea. I recently had the great pleasure of having a one-on-one interview with the pizza king himself.

Looking sharp in his crisp white 400 Gradi uniform, Johnny seemed relaxed and happy. I, on the other hand, was slightly starstruck, finding it almost surreal that the guy I watched on MasterChef a few weeks ago was now sitting in front of me. In case you’re wondering, Johnny (yep, we are on a first name basis now!) is the first Australian ever trained in Naples according to Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana VPN rules. His family is from Naples in Southern coastal Italy, known as the home of ‘world’s best’ pizza, so it’s safe to say that Johnny has pizza in his blood. I asked him for the secret to a good pizza, to which he replied “quality ingredients, a really good dough and passion”. I couldn’t agree more, and it wasn’t hard to see how passionate he was as he talked about the new venture, but it was hard to believe that a chef of Johnny’s calibre can be so grounded and humble.

Onboard Pacific Explorer, 400 Gradi will be serving up the chef’s award winning traditional Italian pizzas plus other favourites such as the Capricciosa and Diavola. 400 Gradi will also offer several desserts (including panna cotta with pistachio and caramelised popcorn, YUM!!!) and salumi boards with hand selected 18-month prosciutto, Italian cheeses and wines for a fast and fun family meal or a longer, Italian-style feast.

Pacific Explorer is arriving in June 2017 so you’d better get your tummy ready and prepared! Buon appetito!
