I am not a steak kinda girl. Don’t get me wrong, I love meat. Especially the slow cooked kind, but when the other travel bunny asks me where I would like to go for dinner, it’s not often that I would say, let’s go to a steakhouse!
I watched a video by Guillaume Brahimi recently cooking a piece of thick steak. I’m not sure if it was the sexy sizzling sound of steak heating up in the pan or what, but I couldn’t get the image of that piece of steak out of my head. I dialled the other travel bunny on his work number and asked him to make an urgent reservation at Les Bubbles.
It was Friday night and we arrived at this French-style bistro that was once an illegal casino and brothel but is now the latest dining venue by Damian Griffiths. The old glamour decor is simply fabulous, think red leather booths, big mirrors, gold picture frames, black and white tiles and a big, open kitchen where guests can salivate over the constant aroma of grilling meat. The menu is simple - grass-fed, free range steak served to your liking. Yep, you read it right. They have one signature dish and they do it well. First up comes bread and butter, which you can not skip because you’d be crazy to miss the perfectly foil-wrapped Président butter made in the heart of Normandy. Just as I thought that I would be happy to eat the butter for the rest of the night, we were presented with a plate of salad each. The crisp salad was dressed with just a touch of vinaigrette, a perfect refreshing starter to the heavyweight prize… our delicious, juicy steaks cooked medium rare. The steak comes with your choice of sauces, including café de Paris, béarnaise, and green peppercorn & cognac. Oh and have I mentioned that you get bottomless frites? Yep, as much as you can possibly eat. They are seriously good frites too!
Did we get a happy ending from this once brothel? We certainly did, it was a serve of Nutella & coffee ice cream crepes ($14.90)…
