The Burrito Bar Banyo | 279 Tufnell Road, BANYO QLD 4014

We indulged in some wonderful produce during our recent Hunter Valley getaway, but having eaten at fine dining restaurants for lunch and dinner consecutively for days on end, the other travel bunnie and I were both craving for something relaxed and fun. We found ourselves at The Burrito Bar Banyo browsing through their menu which offers an abundance of food options, not to mention a delicious selection of cocktails. I had my eyes on the Margarita Romantica which is a blend of Don Julio 1942 Tequila, Cointreau and Midori, shaken with lime juice & agave nectar then garnished with a strawberry. It tasted as yummy as it looked.

After hearing the recommendations from our waitress (whom, mind you, had a great personality and was so attentive yet in a very casual way), I literally wanted everything off the menu. I didn’t, luckily, as the portions were so generous and all we wanted to do after dinner was to curl up into a ball. The chicken wings are a must. They were simply sweet tenderness coated in smoky hickory BBQ sauce. I thought they were the best thing that there is at The Burrito Bar, but that was until I saw my Taco Salad; filled with Mexislaw, pico de gallo, roasted tomato salsa, lime rice and savoury beans with chicken, then topped with sour cream and guacamole, it was all served in a bowl made out of crispy taco chips. No word of a lie, it was the best taco salad I have ever had. I invited the other travel bunnie to try my taco salad, but he insisted that he was completed satisfied with his Ultimate Mexican Burrito. If you are a taco fan, be sure to try the Baja fish taco with chipotle mayo, mexislaw & roasted tomato salsa and the Aida taco - slow cooked marinated beef with cheese and pico de gallothe, as they were pretty good as well.

If you go there, make sure you don’t miss out on their churros. Served with vanilla ice cream and lashings of rich chocolate sauce, these cinnamon sugar dusted churros are a wonderful way to finish a Mexican feast.

Chilliwow | 22 Constance Street, FORTITUDE VALLEY QLD 4006

Exactly a week ago today, I attended a mid-week fiesta in Mexico with Chilliwow. Well, at least that’s what it felt like. With all the beautiful and exotic decorations at the establishment, it was a close to a Mexican paradise as you can get 5 mins from home.

The other travel bunnie and I were invited to Chilliwow, a Mexican Bar and Cantina nestled in a backstreet in the Valley for the launch of their brand new summer Menu. It was a night of funky music, awesome cocktails and endless Mexican food. You see, the night all started with some “innocent” looking jalapeno poppers, but they weren’t any ordinary jalapeno poppers, those crumbed whole jalapeno poppers were stuffed with cream cheese and served with coriander mayo. I had one and I couldn’t stop myself eat more. They were really THAT addictive. And from then on, the food just kept flowing. From different flavours of tacos, to nachos topped with house made refried black beans, chilli con carne, tasty chees, queso fresco, pico de gallo, jalapenos & guacamole¸ it literally felt like if we weren’t drinking, we were constantly shoving down the delicious Mexican treats into our mouths. For all you chilli lovers out there, Chilliwow provides extra bottles of hot sauces to challenge your tastebuds and those sauces are HOT.

Their new summer menu offers classic Mexican options with very friendly price tags. And what’s more special at this place is that the summer menu is paired with an equally impressive drink menu that would easily blow your mind with those tempting and delicious sounding cocktails. If you are like me, and get way too excited by looking at the drink menu to decide (but ultimately failed miserably as I wanted to sample everything), then ask one of their friendly wait staff for a recommendation!

The night finished on a sweet note… oh so sweet with those churros. Picture churros being coated in cinnamon sugar and served with chilli & orange dipping sauce with a side of cream… now you hear me.

The two owners are extremely friendly, one of whom took us for a tour around Chilliwow and shared some ideas with us - a breezy outdoor function area, a Cuban bar and plenty more to come. So stay tuned.

Hey, next time if you’re looking for a place for a causal night of fun and good cheap eats, Chilliwow might just be your answer.

Oh! Mexico | Miami, FLORIDA USA

The moment when we checked into our hotel in Miami, my tummy started rumbling. We had been eating five meals a day with snacks in between on our Caribbean cruise, and I suppose my whole body just freaked out when I hadn't had any food for a few hours.

We walked along the Espanola Way and were immediately attracted to a big bowl of freshly made guacamole (I swear that it was calling my name...). My feet didn't want to move any further, we found the closest table outside at Oh! Mexico and sat down.

We ordered guacamole for two ($12.50) and some drinks. It was enough to keep me going for the rest of the afternoon. The avocado mixture had fresh herbs and lime which gave the guacamole a good tang.

Espanola Way is gorgeous and exotic street tucked away from bustling Washington Avenue. It was a pity that we didn't have too much time in Miami (or perhaps bigger stomachs...), but next time when we go there, we would definitely try a few more options. I have my mind set on Havana 1957 Cuban Cuisine.

La Quinta Café y Bar, 1/189 Oxford Street, BULIMBA QLD 4171

Mexican cuisine seems to have been well represented around BrisVegas now and when it comes to Mexicano, La Quinta Café y Bar is a must.

Nestled in the popular suburb of Bulimba, this funky establishment when compared to a number of other fast food Mexican eateries in Brisbane serves more than just tacos and burritos.

It provides atmosphere and excitement. Pop a flag up on your cactus and a friendly staff will quickly come over to provide you with assistance.

For the first timers I would highly recommend having one of their pre-set feasts. Starting at just $60.00 for two people, you are guaranteed to get a wide selection of true Mexican flavours. To accompany your meal, make sure that you order their signature Sangria, a delicious and colourful Mexican drink that always has the desired effect of giggling the way through the rest of the meal for me.

My all time favourite is of course their chocolate Buñuelo - an essential in Mexican cuisine.

This place gets really busy at dinner services so booking is recommended. Service can be lacking at busy times, but put on a smile and remember to wave your cactus high in the air and I’m sure you’ll get what you want!

The Burrito Bar, 5/167 Grey Street, SOUTH BANK QLD 4101

Other than the painted wall, nothing else at The Burrito Bar attracts me. We took advantage of their cheap Tuesday two tacos for $6 deal (after having waffles). When the tacos arrived at our table, I was like wow… duuuuuuuude what happened to the meat? Photos don’t lie, you be the judge.

I was really hoping that The Burrito Bar would provide some good quality Mexican food. The novelty wears off quickly and be honest, good tasty flavours never do.

Cactus Republic, Stanley Street Plaza, Shop 30BB, SOUTH BRISBANE 4101

I admit it, I am a sucker for cute and unique names of restaurants and eateries and Cactus Republic sure caught my attention.

I love the location. I love the casual interior, simple yet very Mexican. Their Corona chandeliers is an awesome idea. I love drinking their frozen margarita under the summer sun. The only disappointment was their chicken wings, other than that, I think Cactus Republic is a great place to grab a quick bite.

Oh, have I mentioned that they have a tequila bar? Tequila tequila tequila!!!~
