Checking in: QT Melbourne | Melbourne, AUSTRALIA

It’s hard for me not to like QT Melbourne. Sure, there’s no grand entrance or porte-cochere, but there’s something so trendy and funky about QT that just fits so well with Melbourne’s scene. Located on Russell Street in the CBD, QT Melbourne was once the Great Union cinemas but now it houses 188 hotel rooms, restaurants and even a rooftop bar.

In the week prior to our arrival, I received an email for online check-in, which took only a few minutes and it included an option to upgrade to the next level room (subject to availability) for only $20 extra per night. We even received thoughtful text messages from QT prior to our arrival.

As there isn’t a porte-cochere, it may be a little difficult to find a parking spot in front of the hotel as it is located on a very busy street. We booked the valet service and were told to park in the laneway next to the hotel and someone would take care of our luggage and car. It was a breeze.

Our room was ready for us just before midday which was incredibly handy so that we could chill for a little bit after our flight and get freshened up for our lunch at Flower Drum. I adored the lobby which is filled with bold colours and different elements of wood, concrete and brass. And yes, there is a peacock staring at you next to the stairs that lead to the hotel’s restaurant, Pascale Bar & Grill (which takes up an entire floor).

Our room, a Deluxe King was located on the 6th floor. Having stayed at quite a number of QT properties in Australia, I must admit that I probably enjoy those elevator rides a bit too much. In case you didn’t know, the elevators at QT hotels talk to you and often with cheeky one-liners in a sultry European accent.

The room was quite spacious and clean-lined. The bathroom, which was separated from the bedroom by heavy sliding glass doors featured a standalone bath tub and walk-in rain shower, and it’s definitely a monochrome lover’s dream come true. QT properties have one of the quirkiest minibars I have ever seen. From miniature bottles of Patrón and Grey Goose to beard grooming kits and a Melbourne city guide, you’ll be able to find them all neatly lined up on the writing desk.

When we checked out of the hotel and moved onto the next leg of our holiday, I realised that I had forgotten Minibun George’s fluffy toy at the hotel, a white bunny rabbit that he’s had since birth. On that same day, the hotel called and arranged delivery of bunny, who has since then safely arrived home.

If you are after a central hotel that’s comfortable, modern and has a quirky touch, you really can’t go wrong with QT Melbourne.
