Allium Restaurant + Bar | 148 Merthyr Road, NEW FARM QLD 4005

It has been quite a while since the last time we visited The Foraging Quail in the trendy suburb of New Farm. For those people who are yet to visit The Foraging Quail, your chance is gone, as The Foraging Quail closed its doors on 25 September this year and has now been replaced with a new establishment, Allium Restaurant + Bar. Opened by husband and wife team, James and Kylie Gallagher, although the restaurant has maintained most of The Foraging Quail’s decor, the menu here is completely different and it’s aimed at being changed regularly so that customers can keep trying something different. One would also be excited to know that James was the former head chef of Sofitel’s Privé 249.

Brunch is served here every Saturday and Sunday, and yesterday being the first day of their brunch service, we decided to check it out. The menu is quite simple here but every dish sounded delicious to me. We started with some bold and intense coffee. While we waited for the food to arrive, we ordered a croissant with hazelnut praline ($6) for Minibun George. I know what you’re thinking, ‘what’s there to write about a croissant?’. I know, I know. But you’ve gotta try the hazelnut praline. Eating it with the croissant was like pure happiness in my mouth (oh wait, did I just eat half of George’s food?). The other travel bunnie ordered bacon and eggs ($16) with a side of halloumi ($3). And it was just that. Presented on a white plate, were two perfectly poached eggs, smoked bacon, tomato kasundi and potato rosti. Although I was expecting some fancy schmancy plating, the other travel bunnie thought that it was exactly what he was after and the tomato kasundi just made everything taste that much better. My dish of citrus cured ocean trout, dill, caper, crème fresh on rye ($16) tasted as good as it looked; wonderfully vibrant in colours and rich in flavours.

Service was quick and friendly with the staff for more than happy to come over for a chat.

As I’m sitting here writing this post, I’m drooling over the brunch menu again, and I’m kicking myself for not ordering the cereal ($16) - coco-pop panna cotta, malt ice-cream, milo crumb. Next time.

Total Bunnie Dollars Spent: $47.50
