Hellenic Republic | Melbourne, AUSTRALIA
After
a long day of driving along the Great Ocean Road, it was completely
and utterly necessary to get some comfort food into our tummies.
We
couldn’t think of anywhere better to go than Goergie Porgie’s
Hellenic Republic in Brunswick.
The
sensational smell of grilled meat from the open kitchen and the
stereotypical white and blue colours used for the restaurant’s
casual décor immediately relaxed us. We knew exactly what we wanted,
Kotopoulo Psistaria - free range chicken from the spit
($25 for 350g) and Arni Sto Fourno - slow roasted shoulder
of lamb, garlic, oregano ($29
for 350g) with a side of traditional village Salad ($11.50)
and pan fried wild greens, lemon, olive oil
($9.50). The food was simple, tasty and fulfilling, just like
something that mumma would cook when we go home on the weekends.
It
would’ve been impossible to leave without having some loukoumathes
- Hellenic doughnuts, honey, cinnamon, walnuts
($10.00) and Risogalo - rice pudding, salted caramel,
shortbread crumble, pistachio
($8.00). The other travel bunnie first introduced me to
loukoumathes when we
were in Crete. We were walking back to our hotel after dinner and
happened to walk past a small dessert shop that only sells these
delicious honey drizzled Greek doughnuts and I have been hooked ever
since. The risogalo
was so yummy. The dessert came in a cute white jar and it had just
the right amount of sweetness and the texture was extremely creamy.
Don’t
expect any creative or fancy dishes as Hellenic Republic is all about
homely, traditional Greek cooking.
Total
Bunnie Dollars Spent: $66.50
