Bamboo Basket, 199 Grey Street, SOUTH BRISBANE QLD 4101

Our recent trip to Bamboo Basket turned out to be a huge disappointment. I’m unsure whether all the good reviews that I’d read led me to having too high an expectation for this place, but I am not holding back anything on this review. Yes, the Chinese terracotta warrior lanterns that are guarding the entrance are pretty cool and the restaurant offers a better interior than your average local Chinese takeout joints. But - that’s when it all stops.

Service seemed really disorganised. Our teapot was left empty for 15 minutes before the waitress rolled her eyes at us when we very politely asked if she could fill it up with some hot water for us. It was a thirty minute wait before we got their house specialty “xiao long bao” (which really wasn’t all that). The poached chicken with chilli oil, fresh chill and Szechuan pepper (also known as “mouth-watering chicken - 口水鸡”) was not cooked by the chef, the chicken was diced by the kitchen and the waitress simply poured chilli oil and soy on over the chicken, oh and she kindly sprinkled some sesame seeds on top. The roasted pork belly we ordered never got delivered to our table, no apology was given and it was a struggle to get the dish taken off our bill (our waitress assured us that she would come back with an amended bill and that was the last time we saw her).

I’m sorry for being really harsh on this review, but I hope you can understand my frustration through the words.

Looks can be deceiving, next time when I want Chinese food, I’ll just stick to Sunnybank.

  1. It hasn't really disappointed me yet. I went once at lunch and once for dinner. The lunch specials are really good and we went on a weeknight for dinner so the service was also great.

    1. Really? I did go on a busy night I suppose, but it was nevertheless below average in my opinion. I did read some reviews on their lunch specials and noodles, perhaps next time. :)

  2. I have heard the service is bad at times, and its true we didn't experience the best service both times we ate there - this is definitely something they need to work on, but I really enjoyed their food... thought the xiao long bao were much more flavoursome than some I ate at Sunnybank (not that I know a lot about Shanghai cuisine).

    1. My partner also thought their food was very delicious, but I guess I was too upset at the fact that our dish ended on someone else's table...
