The Smug Fig | 999 Stanley Street E, EAST BRISBANE QLD 4169
Located on Stanley Street East in East Brisbane, this quaint cafe reminds me of an urban oasis. The Smug Fig is its name and the moment that I stepped into the courtyard and onto a wooden deck, I was surrounded by flowers and greenery.
Orders are to be placed at the blue shipping container cum espresso pouring hub at the front of the cafe. I like that sort of system, I’ve always found it more efficient than waiting for someone to come to your table to take the orders and bring you the bill.
Breakfast staples can be found throughout the all day brunch menu, along with a number of unique, interesting options such as the Mac Daddy ($19) - perfectly crumbed mac and cheese hash and maple glazed pork belly placed on a green pea puree with cheese & chive sauce. As soon as the other travel bunnie saw this on the menu, he knew that he wanted it in his tummy. And oh man, was it satisfying watching the other travel bunnie devour the whole thing. The pork belly was succulent and that massive slab of mac and cheese hash made the perfect other-half (or so I was told).
I shared the Halloumi Stack ($18.50) with Minibun George - perfectly grilled halloumi cheese and shortcut bacon expertly stacked on a parmesan & herb sourdough loaded with crushed avocado, then gently topped with a soft-boiled egg cooked just right so that when I sliced it open, bright egg yolk oozed out and caressed the halloumi, then the bacon and finally made its way to the sourdough. It was yolk porn at its best.
I find it impossible to pass over a good pancake so I just had to order the Pecan Pie French Toast ($15.50) for the three of us to share. Toffee ice cream covered in a biscuit & pecan crumb was placed inside a wonderfully fluffy French toast sandwich, which was then garnished with caramel pecans and drizzled with butterscotch sauce. It was epic. I would strongly recommend this dish especially if you have a sweet tooth.
The Smug Fig shares its spacious location with a nursery, an antique shop where you can find old typewriters and gilded vintage mirrors, as well as a fashion store. The relaxing environment makes The Smug Fig a perfect place for a weekend brunch, and if you’re after a midweek escape from the hustle and bustle of the stressful CBD life, The Smug Fig is literally a stone throw away.
Disclaimer: with thanks to The Smug Fig for welcoming DolceBunnie to the property as an invited guest, please note that my opinion is as always, my own.
