Thai Wi-Rat, 48 Duncan Street, FORTITUDE VALLEY QLD 4006

We pushed and shoved our way through the chaotic streets in the Valley last night as the Valley Fiesta was on and the streets were filled with party animals. Our destination was a busy restaurant called Thai Wi-Rat.

Buzzing and crammed seemed to be an appropriate way to describe this Thai - Laos restaurant. Orders are to be placed and paid at the counter before you get any food on the table. The menu is filled with words with foreign pronunciations and little explanatory is given hence people with little or no prior Thai dining experience may find it difficult to understand the menu.

As usual, we went slightly overboard with the ordering. Coconut prawns ($8.90) for entree, followed by penang chicken curry ($10.90), pad thai noodles, crispy softshell crab salad ($16.90) and coconut rice ($3.50 each) for mains.

Although the food arrived promptly, I can't say that I was overly impressed. The pad thai noodles was perhaps the yummiest and as for the softshell crab salad, it tasted really fishy. The penang curry came in a really small portion which was unfortunate as I had a huge craving for some good, saucy Thai curry. The Thai milk tea I ordered had way too much sugar syrup and very little taste of tea. On top of all that, you get very minimal service at this restaurant if any at all.

Let's just say, we will not return again and would prefer Siam Samararn for similar prices and distance from the CBD.

Total Bunnie Dollars Spent: $58.

  1. Maybe you need to understand Thai food before commenting. From what you ordered it seems you have no idea(coconut rice is a Thai desert).Thai salads taste fishy because of fish sauce or pala and Thai tea is supposed to be very sweet.
This Restaurant is about as good as Thai food gets in Brisbane.Give the place one more try and order the Issan set. Siam Samrarn is a nice place to eat.

    1. Hi Anonymous, thank you for your comment.

I'm certainly not a food connoisseur, nor have I ever claimed to be. I'm simply someone who really enjoys eating and loves sharing her experiences with everyone. Having been to Thailand before, I would like to think that I have some idea about Thai food (in my humble opinion anyway).

Your comment regarding that coconut rice is a Thai desert (sic) is rather interesting and I would like to point out that most Thai restaurants in Brisbane have coconut rice on their menus as an alternative to normal steamed rice, but then again, what would I know.

With respect to the softshell crab salad, I was actually being polite. To be blunt, the crab meat tasted fishy because they were not fresh, but perhaps I was being to nice and didn't explain that very well.

Indeed, Thai milk tea is supposed to be sweet, but perhaps the waitress accidentally tipped a whole bottle of sugar syrup into my drink.

Thank you for your recommendation and although I am certainly not in a rush to go back, I will definitely keep it in mind for next time.

      I appreciate your comment. =)
